Aleksandra Zee creates three-dimensional objects from found and re-purposed materials and situates them in site specific installations. Ranging in scale from small interventions to whole room distortions, she strives to transform the viewer’s perception of the space. Zee is interested in the transcendence of the harsh, broken, or discarded materials into objects of soft whimsy. In much the same way, Zee wants the viewer to pause and lose themselves in the altered environment.

Originally from Los Angeles, Zee is constantly inspired by her peers and life in San Francisco.

Sitting in FourBarrel Coffee on a cloudy San Francisco morning sipping coffee in her overalls, long hair flowing over her shoulders, Aleksandra Zeel ooks like any other hip Mission dweller — until she explains her vocation.

“A lady woodworker is definitely tough as nails, because men are thought of as woodworkers,” says Zee, 29. “It’s really uncommon for ladies to be excelling in the woodworking lifestyle. So you have to have thick skin.”

This tireless, nail-gun-wielding woman, who also describes herself as “freedom-oriented,” is doing something unusual in these times: Earning a living in tech-oriented San Francisco as a full-time woodworker.
