Name: Chen Da

Japanese Name: Chōkanko Chintatsu

Rank: 72nd of the 108 Stars of Destiny

Nickname: Leaping Tiger

Chen Da was originally from Yecheng but had become second in command of 700 bandits residing at Mount Shaohua. First in command was Zhu Wu (plates 2; 5), and third in command was Yang Chun (plate 5). Chen Da fought with a three pronged halberd and was known for his bad temper as well as his impatience.

Chen Da is depicted here being thrown from his horse in his battle with Shi Jin (plates 1; 4; 9). This scene is the leftmost segment of a triptych which is a more elaborate illustration of the battle between Shi Jin and Chen Da seen on plate 1. The triptych is arranged from left to right in the sequence of plates 3, 4, and 5. This is the only point in the series where the same scene is illustrated multiple times. For more details about this scene and about Chen Da, see plate 1.
