Zhu Gui was originally from Yizhou Prefecture but was already a member of the Liangshan bandits when he is introduced in the novel. At that time, the bandit stronghold was still led by the original founder of the Liangshan bandits, Wang Lun. He put Zhu Gui in charge of running an inn which acted as a lookout, and was located on the other side of the marsh. Zhu Gui would spy on patrons’ conversations to find out when wealthy visitors were in the area. He would then shoot an arrow with a whistle attached to notify the bandits of potential quarry, and they would ferry across the marsh to rob and kill the unsuspecting travelers. He would shoot a different arrow to alert Liangshan of the arrival of visitors who were to be greeted as friends. Sometimes, if the circumstances were right, Zhu Gui would simply murder travelers himself, sell their flesh as meat, and their fat as lamp oil. He is described as being tall, with strong cheek bones, a small beard, a mustache, and an expression of authority.
