Wang Ying was a dwarf from Lianghuai who is described as having very bright and shining eyes as well as being very lustful of women. He had worked as a coachman until he robbed a patron of his valuables and killed him. He was arrested for the murder, but escaped prison and became one of the three bandit leaders on Mount Qingfeng alongside Yan Shun (plate 104) and Zheng Tianshou (plate 98).
The bandits of Mount Qingfeng set traps for wandering travelers with the intention of robbing them, then killing and eating them. They had captured Song Jiang (plate 107), and when they realized who he was, immediately released him. They apologized profusely, threw him a feast as their honored guest, and convinced him to stay at their stronghold for several days. During that time, Wang Ying captured the wife of the civil magistrate Liu Gao, and brought her back to the stronghold with the intention of having his way with her. Song Jiang realized she was the wife of an important official, and convinced Wang Ying to let her go, then promised to find him a wife of his own.
Later, Liu Gao’s wife recognized Song Jiang at a lantern festival in Qingfeng Town. She pointed him out to her husband and falsely accused him as the man who had nearly raped her. Song Jiang was arrested and banished to Qingzhou Prison. Hua Rong (plate 28)—the military commander of Qingfeng Fortress and Song Jiang’s close friend—attempted to help him escape, but he was caught and arrested and banished to Qingzhou Prison as well.
Military officer Huang Xin (plate 26) was tasked with leading the escort party transporting Song Jiang and Hua Rong to Qingzhou Prison. Along the way, they were intercepted by Wang Ying and his bandits. A fight ensued between Huang Xin and Wang Ying and two of Wang Ying’s fellow chieftains. Huang Xin could not defeat three at once, so he turned his horse and galloped away. His men all followed suit in a confused and jumbled retreat, allowing Song Jiang and Hua Rong to be set free. Civil Magistrate Liu Gao, who had been traveling with the escort party, was captured by the bandits and killed.

As the story unfolded, Song Jiang suggested the bandits of Mount Qingfeng relocate to Liangshan Marsh and join with the bandit force there led by Chao Gai (see plate 14). Everyone agreed to the plan and they packed up the stronghold and journeyed to Liangshan Marsh.
Plates 25 and 26 form a diptych of Wang Ying squaring off to fight Huang Xin.
