Chinese Name: Bao Xu

Japanese Name: Sōmonshin Hōkyoku

Rank: 60th of the 108 Stars of Destiny

Nickname: God of Death

Bao Xu led a gang of bandits on Mount Kushu. He is described as being very ugly, with bulging eyes and skin the color of iron. He  was called, “God of Death”, for his love of killing.

Jiao Ting (plate 81) was on his way to enlist with Bao Xu and the bandits of Mount Kushu when he happened upon Li Kui (36; 81; 107). Li Kui was on a mission to kill Shan Tinggui and Wei Dingguo (see plates 83; 84 for story details), and he didn’t like the way Jiao Ting looked at him as they crossed paths, so he challenged him to a fight. Jiao Ting quickly proved the better fighter and Li Kui was defeated.

Impressed, Li Kui invited Jiao Ting to join the legions at Liangshan Marsh. He suggested they travel to Mount Kushu together to enlist Bao Xu and his bandits to help kill Shan Tinggui and Wei Dingguo. Once this deed was accomplished, Bao Xu, the bandits from Mount Kushu, and Jiao Ting, could travel with Li Kui to Liangshan Marsh and join their legions. Jiao Ting agreed and when they reached Mount Kushu, Bao Xu listened to their proposal and signed on as well.

Bao Xu is depicted here assembling his weapons to go fight Shan Tinggui and Wei Dingguo.
