Chinese Name: Shi Yong

Japanese Name: Sekishōgun Sekiyū

Rank: 99th of the 108 Stars of Destiny

Nickname: Stone General

Shi Yong is described as being tall and pale and having a clean shaven face with pronounced cheek bones and bright eyes. His preferred weapon was the short staff. He ran a gambling den in Daming Prefecture, but fled after killing a man over a gambling dispute. He sought refuge from Chai Jin (plate 11) at which point he heard many accolades about the chivalrous and honorable Song Jiang (plate 107). He decided to seek out Song Jiang and join him.

Song Jiang was traveling with Yan Shun (plate 104) and his bandits of Mount Qingfeng to relocate their stronghold and join forces with the bandit army of Liangshan Marsh (see plates 25-28 for details). By chance, they stopped along the way at a tavern where Shi Yong happened to be taking a respite from his travels. Initially, there was a dispute over the seating arrangements, and just as a fight was about to ensue, Shi Yong realized he was quarreling with Song Jiang, the very man he’d been searching for. After further introductions were made, Song Jiang informed Shi Yong of their plans to join with the bandits at Liangshan Marsh. Shi Yong asked if he might also be included, and Song Jiang gladly welcomed him along.

As the saga of the Liangshan bandits continued, Song Jiang and his legions were granted amnesty by the Emperor. To prove their merit they were sent to battle the rebel leader Fang La; he had amassed his own large bandit army and taken control of several prefectures, appointing himself king of the region.

While battling the Fang La forces in Shezhou, Li Yun (plate 39) had tried to intercept one of Fang La’s men, General Wang Yin, but was trampled by his horse. Shi Yong ran to help his comrade but was killed in the ensuing fight when he was run through by the General’s lance.

Shi Yong is depicted here grappling one of Fang La’s men to the ground.
